Unemployment claims rose to a 26-year high of 586,000 for the week ending 12/20/2008. That was an increase of 30,000 from the 556,000 revised figure for the prior week, and up from a recent high of 575,000 claims reported earlier this month.
This year has been marked by astonishing and market-changing events including a $100 fall in the price of oil, the drop to zero of U.S. interest rates and the collapse of Wall Street giants such as Lehman Brothers.Next year could bring more, equally unbelievable, happenings such as another 400 points being wiped off the S&P 500 and a slump in Chinese growth to zero, according to a report from Saxo Bank titled "10 Outrageous Claims 2009."

November sales and price report.
Home sales increased 83.2 percent in November in California compared with the same period a year ago, while the median price of an existing home fell 41.8 percent, the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (C.A.R.) reported.
